Extension at University of Liverpool

A Planning Application was secured for a new single-storey entrance lobby to the Chadwick Building, improving accessibility, visibility and internal connectivity within a prominent university campus setting.

Originally constructed in the late 1950s, the building had limited ground-level engagement and a fragmented route between two Student Support Areas. The brief sought to create a clear and welcoming entrance while improving inclusive access for students and staff.

The proposal introduces a lightweight steel-framed structure with full-height glazing and timber cladding, forming a modest 50 square metre extension. A distinctive timber entrance feature enhances legibility on approach, while the flat roof profile is set below the existing parapet to minimise visual impact.

The scheme provides level access throughout, including a new low-gradient ramp, widened door openings and improved circulation. Careful consideration was given to nearby heritage assets to ensure the development preserves the wider setting.

The result is a simple yet effective intervention that strengthens campus presence, improves accessibility and creates a more coherent arrival experience.
